Update - Sunday 8th September 2013 - Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Due to unforeseen circumstances, it isn't going to be possible to hold our scheduled Mass for the Nativity of the BVM in the the Eyre Chapel at Newbold. However, Fr Craig Fitzpatrick is still very keen to offer the Mass for us and so we have agreed that rather than cancel, we will now have the Mass at Staveley instead. The revised details are shown below:

Sunday 8th September 2013 - Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
2.30 p.m. Rosary followed at 3.00 p.m. with a Sung Mass
St Joseph's Church,
Chesterfield Road,
Staveley,
S43 3QF

Sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused; I know that several of you had said that you were looking forward to visiting the Eyre Chapel but alas this is unavoidable. I would like to thank Fr Craig for his very kind offer of transferring the Mass; the important thing to remember is that we still have a Mass and devotions to honour our Blessed Lady and I would encourage as many of you as possible to come to Staveley if you can and show your support and appreciation to Fr Craig. It is several years since we visited there and it is nice to be going back again. Who knows, we may even be able to establish something more regularly there for the future? Divine providence is a wonderful thing!

Annual LMS Pilgrimage to Padley Chapel

The Pilgrimage will begin at 12.30 pm at Grindleford Station with a Rosary Procession to Padley Chapel, followed by Missa Cantata at 1.00 p.m. at Padley Chapel.

Padley chapel is the remains of Padley Manor, originally the private chapel of Padley Hall, which, in the sixteenth century, was owned by the devout Catholic Fitzherbert family.

The Hall was regularly raided for evidence of Catholic worship until, in July 1588, two priests were found hiding within the walls. Nicholas Garlick and Robert Ludlam were found guilty of high treason and, together with Richard Sympson who shared their faith, were hung, drawn and quartered at Derby before the month was out, their butchered remains stuck onto poles on St. Mary’s Bridge. They became known as the  ‘Padley Martyrs’.

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone on the Traditional Latin Mass

For nearly 10 years Archbishop Cordileone has accepted invitations to celebrate the Tridentine Mass. In the middle of our interview, the Oratorian priest Fr Rupert pops in and asks the archbishop if he will offer the 8am Tridentine Mass the next day, and he enthusiastically agrees to do so. Commenting on what he feels distinguishes the Extraordinary Form, Archbishop Cordileone says: “With that form of Mass you can feel the Church breathing through the centuries.”

He has strong opinions about Latin. “It is the common language of the Catholic world and it’s especially advantageous when people of different language backgrounds come together,” he says. “The irony is that the Church made the move to the vernacular just at the point in history when, because of migration and tourism, people began travelling all over the world. Thus, it would be convenient to have a shared language that we can all worship in. But it does make sense to have parts in the vernacular, such as the Propers and especially the readings.”

We get on to discussing why there is a relatively high number of young men pursuing vocations in seminaries dedicated to the Extraordinary Form. “The Old Rite corresponds more to a masculine spirituality in that the masculine psyche is one that protects, defends and provides, and during the Mass the priest is the one who dares to approach God to reconcile His people to him. In the Old Rite there is a greater sense of the priest as intercessor, offering a sacrifice for the people and bringing God’s gift to the people.” (..)

Why are the youth associated more and more with the Old Rite? “It follows the phenomenon of young people being more traditional in their religion,” he says. “In the years after the Council there were social revolutions in religious groups and the thinking was that the Church should be more like modern culture. Prayerfully minded young people of this generation want something different or opposed to secular culture. But they perceive the failures of western civilisation. They want something seriously Catholic and meaty.”
